Unit Overview

The Legal Service Unit serves as the primary legal resource within the university, providing legal advice, representation, and guidance on a wide range of matters. It ensures that the university operates within the bounds of the law and protects its legal interests and rights. The Legal Service Unit plays a crucial role in managing legal risks, resolving disputes, and upholding the legal integrity of the institution.

To provide comprehensive legal support to the university community. This involves offering legal advice, representation, and educational resources to ensure compliance with laws and regulations, protect the university’s interests, and promote a safe, inclusive, and equitable environment.

To be a trusted and proactive partner in advancing the university's mission by delivering exceptional legal services. The unit aims to foster a legally sound environment that supports academic excellence, innovation, and the well-being of the university community.

Powers, Duties and Functions

  1. Legal Advice and Counsel

    • Provide legal advice to the university's administration, faculty, and staff on a wide range of issues, including contracts, employment law, intellectual property, student affairs, and compliance with state and federal laws.
  2. Legal Representation

    • Represent the university in legal proceedings, including litigation, administrative hearings, and other disputes.
    • Handle responses to legal claims and manage external legal counsel when necessary.
  3. Policy Development and Compliance

    • Assist in the development, review, and implementation of university policies to ensure legal compliance and best practices.
    • Monitor and interpret changes in laws and regulations affecting the university and advise on necessary adjustments.
  4. Contract Review and Negotiation

    • Review, draft, and negotiate contracts and agreements on behalf of the university, ensuring they align with legal standards and the university’s interests.
  5. Risk Management

    • Identify and assess legal risks facing the university and develop strategies to mitigate these risks.
    • Provide training and resources to the university community on legal issues and risk management practices.
  6. Dispute Resolution

    • Facilitate the resolution of disputes involving the university, including mediation and other alternative dispute resolution methods.
  7. Education and Training

    • Conduct educational programs and workshops on legal topics relevant to the university community, such as compliance, intellectual property, and employment law.
    • Develop and distribute resources to promote legal literacy and awareness.
  8. Ethics and Governance

    • Support the university’s governance structures by advising on ethical issues and conflicts of interest.
    • Ensure adherence to ethical standards and promote a culture of integrity within the university.
  9. Student and Employee Affairs

    • Provide legal support in matters related to student and employee conduct, grievances, and disciplinary actions.
    • Advise on legal issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  10. Intellectual Property Management

    • Advise on matters related to the creation, protection, and commercialization of intellectual property developed at the university.
    • Assist in the management of patents, copyrights, trademarks, and licensing agreements.

By fulfilling these functions, the University Legal Service Unit plays a crucial role in safeguarding the university’s legal interests and supporting its mission to provide high-quality education and research.
