The Mzumbe University (MU) Library stands as a post-modern knowledge hub, providing state-of-the-art access to a vast array of digital and physical resources. Its offerings span all MU campuses and colleges, ensuring equitable access to essential academic materials. Subscribed resources include prestigious databases like Emerald, Wiley Online Library, Taylor and Francis Online, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, and SIAM, covering diverse fields such as business, social sciences, engineering, law, health sciences, and mathematics.
Additionally, the Library provides access to open-access platforms like CORE, DOAJ, Open Textbooks Library, and Swahili Forum, promoting free and inclusive access to high-quality research, peer-reviewed journals, textbooks, and cultural studies. Through its IP-based system, users across all MU locations can seamlessly explore these resources.
The library’s services include study spaces, collaborative zones, and professional librarian support, ensuring users maximize their learning and research experiences. Digital literacy training and teaching enhancement programs further empower students, researchers, and faculty in utilizing these resources effectively.
As an academic cornerstone, the MU Library integrates cutting-edge technology, fostering a culture of continuous learning and global knowledge exchange. Its mission is to provide resources and support that enable transformative education and impactful research, equipping the MU community to address real-world challenges with confidence and competence.
The existence of Mzumbe University Library can be traced back to 2001 after being given status as the Directorate of Library and Technical Services (DLTS) by section 30 (1f) of the MU Charter of 2007 that was made under section 25 of the Universities Act. No. 7 of 2005 which repealed the Mzumbe University Act No. 21 of 2001. Before that, the Library existed under the then Local Government Training Institute that was formed in 1953 and later changed to the Institute of Development Management in 1972 and finally transformed into a University as already highlighted.
The Directorate has three (3) Departments and two (2) Units. The Departments are as follows: Technical Services, Reader Services and Library and Information Science Department. The two Units are the Audio Visual Unit and the Bindery Unit.
To procure textbooks and journals including a subscription to electronic resources mainly e-journal articles and e-books in support of teaching, learning and research activities at the University.
To procure teaching equipment in support of teaching and learning at the University.
To provide convenient study places for improvement of learning and performance of students.
This Unit is under the Technical Service Department and is responsible for re-binding, reinforcing and repairs of worn out and damaged books, journals and students theses. The Unit is well equipped with binding equipment and materials including blocking machine.
This unit provides audiovisual services and modern public address system which supports teaching and learning functions. The equipment includes LCD projectors, Overhead projectors, and portable and heavy-duty public address systems and photographic services.

Department of Library Technical Services (DTS) The Department of Library Technical Services (DTS) is one of the three core departments within the Directorate of Library and Technical Services (DLTS). It plays a crucial role in ensuring the effective delivery of library services by coordinating the activities of four specialized units: the Acquisition & Processing Unit, the Bindery Unit, the Photocopy Services Unit, and the Audio Visual and Public Address Unit. These units collectively support the library's mission to provide seamless access to resources, preserve materials, and enhance the overall user experience through innovative technical solutions and efficient service delivery.
The Reader Services Department is one of the three core departments under the Directorate of Library & Technical Services. Its mission is to provide optimal services that meet the diverse needs of library users. The department plays a pivotal role in facilitating access to library resources, enhancing user experiences, and fostering engagement. Its primary functions include circulation services, ensuring the smooth borrowing and returning of library materials, and providing current awareness services to keep users informed about new resources and updates. The department also handles the registration of new students and staff, coordinates orientation sessions for new library users, and oversees clearance procedures for final-year students, retirees, and departing staff. Additionally, the Reader Services Department actively collaborates with national and international partners to enhance library services and participates in community engagement activities, furthering the university's mission of knowledge sharing and social impact. Through these efforts, the department ensures accessibility, promotes academic collaboration, and supports the university's commitment to excellence.
The Department of Library Systems and Information Management (DLSIM) supports essential library information systems that enhance user access and services. This includes managing the library database (ABCD), the web base, the University Institutional Repository (IR), and remote access software for e-resources, allowing off-campus access to subscription databases. DLSIM also provides Information Literacy Training to users and manages online access to library resources, collections, and repositories. In collaboration with the Information Communication Technology Unit (ICTU), the department ensures the security, upgrades, and maintenance of library ICT software, equipment, and infrastructure. The department is responsible for selecting and acquiring all electronic resources and conducting annual evaluations of the library’s book stock. Additionally, DLSIM oversees the acquisition, processing, and automation of library reference materials, as well as the management of library computers. Through these functions, DLSIM ensures efficient access to resources and maintains the technological infrastructure supporting library services.
