About Library Services Directorate

The MU Library maintains and provides access to a wide variety of online or electronic resources in various subjects. Electronic resources available are in the versions of e-books, and e-journals among others. MU Library subscribes to a wide variety of authoritative online databases such as EBSCO Host, Wiley, and Emerald, among others. Access of most of these resources are IP address based, meaning that they can be accessed within MU using the University internet.

Short History

The existence of Mzumbe University Library can be traced back to 2001 after being given status as the Directorate of Library and Technical Services (DLTS) by section 30 (1f) of the MU Charter of 2007 that was made under section 25 of the Universities Act. No. 7 of 2005 which repealed the Mzumbe University Act No. 21 of 2001. Before that, the Library existed under the then Local Government Training Institute that was formed in 1953 and later changed to the Institute of Development Management in 1972 and finally transformed into a University as already highlighted.

The Directorate has three (3) Departments and two (2) Units. The Departments are as follows: Technical Services, Reader Services and Library and Information Science Department. The two Units are the Audio Visual Unit and the Bindery Unit.

Objectives of the Library

  • To procure textbooks and journals including a subscription to electronic resources mainly e-journal articles and e-books in support of teaching, learning and research activities at the University.

  • To procure teaching equipment in support of teaching and learning at the University.

  • To provide convenient study places for improvement of learning and performance of students.

Units

1. Bindery Unit

This Unit is under the Technical Service Department and is responsible for re-binding, reinforcing and repairs of worn out and damaged books, journals and students theses. The Unit is well equipped with binding equipment and materials including blocking machine.

2. Audio Visual Unit

This unit provides audiovisual services and modern public address system which supports teaching and learning functions. The equipment includes LCD projectors, Overhead projectors, and portable and heavy-duty public address systems and photographic services.

2. FRee E-Resources

CORE:

CORE is a multidisciplinary aggregator of open access research. It allows users to search more than 66 million open access articles. While most of this link to the full-text article on the original publisher's site, five million records are hosted directly on CORE.

DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals):

DOAJ is a community-curated online directory that indexes and provides access to high quality, open access, peer-reviewed journals. DOAJ is independent. All funding is via donations, 22% of which comes from sponsors and 78% from members and publisher members. All DOAJ services are free of charge including being indexed in DOAJ. All data is freely available.

Open Textbooks Library:

These textbooks have been funded, published, and licensed for free use, adaptation, and distribution. They have been reviewed by faculty from a variety of colleges and universities to assess their quality. The books can be downloaded for no cost, or printed at low cost. All textbooks are either used at multiple higher education institutions; or affiliated with an institution, scholarly society, or professional organization.

Directory of Open Access:

This is a rich site for peer-reviewed electronic books in all disciplines. The books are downloadable.

Nature Publishing Group (NPG):

Nature Publishing Group (NPG) is a publisher of high impact scientific and medical information in print and online. NPG publishes journals, online databases and services across the life, physical, chemical and applied sciences and clinical medicine.

Swahili Forum:

Swahili Forum provides a unique platform for research articles on Swahili language, literature as well as on Swahili-speaking cultures and societies in Eastern Africa and the diaspora. As a peer-reviewed open-access journal, Swahili Forum has an unequalled status in international Swahili Studies. Reviews of current research literature and occasional interviews with outstanding Swahili-speaking authors and intellectuals add to the articles on offer.

Department of Technical Services (DTS)

The Department of Library Technical Services (DTS) is among the three departments of Directorate of Library and Technical Services (DLTS). The Department coordinates the activities of four units, namely: Acquisition & Processing Unit, Bindery Unit, Photocopy Services Unit, and Audio Visual and Public Address Unit. Currently, the department has fourteen (14) staff distributed in the mentioned units as follows; Nine (9) working in Acquisition & Processing Unit, four (4) under Audiovisuals and one (1) allocated in bindery and Photocopy Units.

READER SERVICES DEPARTMENT

Department of Reader Services is one of the three departments at the Directorate of Library & Technical Services. The mission of Reader Services Department is to provide optimal levels of services to our users. Functions of reader services department: 1. Circulation, 2. Current Awareness, 3. Registration of new students & new Staff, 4. Clearance of final year students & Staff (Retired & Left MU), 5. Co- ordinate orientation of new users, 6. Collaboration - National & International, 7. Community Engagement Activities.

DLSIM Functions

1. Provision of support of many and essential library information systems including the library database-library catalogue (ABCD), Library webbase, the University Institutional Repository IR), and the Library e-resource remote access software (for accessing subscription database resources from off-campus ), 2. Provision of Information Literacy Training to users, 3. The department manages and provides online access to library resources, collections, and repositories, 4. Liaising with the University, Directorate of Information Communication Technology (DICT) on issues related to security, upgrades, and maintenance, of Library ICT software, equipment and infrastructure, 5. The Department is responsible for the selection and acquisition of ALL electronic resource materials, 6. Carrying out annual library book stock evaluation, 7. Acquisition, processing and automation of Library reference materials, 8. Overseeing Library computers.
