MZUMBE UNIVERSITY DEEPENS INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH PARTNERSHIPS THROUGH FUTURE RURAL AFRICA PROJECT

Mzumbe University has once again elevated its global academic reputation following the successful extension of its participation in the internationally acclaimed CRC/TRR 228 “Future Rural Africa” project for the 2026–2029 phase. The major research initiative, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), is spearheaded by the University of Bonn and the University of Cologne, bringing together scholars from across the world to examine the future of rural transformation in Africa. The latest development marks a significant achievement for Mzumbe University as its representation in the project has now expanded to five researchers, reflecting increasing international confidence in the University’s research capacity and contribution to sustainable development studies. The Mzumbe team is led by Prof. Frank Theobald Theodory, who serves as the In-Country Coordinator, and includes Prof. Venance Shillingi, Dr. Moses Ndunguru, Dr. Lucy W. Massoi, and newly appointed researcher Dr. Eliaza Mkuna. The inclusion of Dr. Mkuna further strengthens the University’s role in advancing high-impact international research collaborations. Speaking about the milestone, Prof. Frank Theobald Theodory said the partnership continues to create valuable opportunities for international research cooperation, scholarly exchange, and academic networking between institutions from different parts of the world. He emphasized that the collaboration aligns closely with Sustainable Development Goal 17, which promotes global partnerships for sustainable development. Through the CRC/TRR 228 “Future Rural Africa” project, researchers explore emerging challenges and opportunities affecting rural communities across Africa, including issues related to livelihoods, governance, resources, and social transformation. The project is expected to generate evidence-based knowledge that contributes to sustainable rural futures and informed policy development. The continued involvement of Mzumbe University in the globally recognized initiative not only strengthens the institution’s international visibility but also reinforces its commitment to producing transformative research with both local and global impact. The University has extended congratulations to Dr. Eliaza Mkuna for joining the research team and wished all participating scholars continued success in advancing impactful international research collaborations beyond borders.
